Mountain Home. Repurposed clothing and secondhand textiles, cotton, linen, natural dyes. 2025. 54" x 58"
Inspired by weekend trips to the Catskill Mountains in New York, this quilt is a cozy patchwork of squares, rectangles and cabin homes with smoking chimneys. Appliquéd crows fly high above the fields and mountains.
The fabrics are a combination of muted florals, plaids, and cotton that has been naturally dyed or eco-printed with plants and flowers. Natural dyes chosen for their earth tones and dusky colors are reminiscent of the changing seasons and nature in upstate New York, grounded in its patchwork of dairy farms and fields. Embroidered across the quilt is a poem for when evening falls: ‘Night blooms beckoning, fireflies flicker like firelight, dusk close on their wings.
The quilt top and back are pieced by machine, then hand-quilted in grid, criss-cross and improv patternsand using many colors and variegated embroidery thread.
Natural dyes include: marigold, oak leaves, rose petals, logwood, onion skin, quebracho rojo, cutch, coreopsis, eucalyptus, avocado skins, black tea, iron and more plants and flowers.
Batting is cotton. Backing is pieced with repurposed cotton and linen and folded over at edges to create binding. Binding is hand-stitched.
Care:
Machine wash cold, delicate cycle using gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Tumble dry low heat or air dry. To keep colors from fading, store or hang out of direct sunlight. Create warm memories, love, patch, and mend.
