Nymph. Repurposed clothing and secondhand textiles, cotton, linen. 2025. 61" x 61"
Inspired by forest nymphs bursting from their human form into flowering trees. This quilt is made of Lemoyne Star quilt blocks in varying color schemes drawn from pre-Raphaelite paintings.
The fabrics are a combination of muted florals and plaids with tea-stained sashing and border to ‘sadden’ the quilt with an earthy foundation. Embroidered across the quilt is a soft reminder for grounding—which can be read up close: ‘The stillness of the quiet woods and whispered wisdom of the trees rooted her where she stood and put her breathing at ease.’ I imagine that the Nymphs were most at peace in their tree and flower forms.
The Pre-Raphaelits used rich but melancholic color palettes and romanticized depictions of women and nature. These artists were drawn to poetry, dreams, myth, fantasy, and magic, in addition to an obvious fascination with textiles and all manner of the arts—many themes I myself am drawn to.
The quilt top and back are pieced by machine. Hand-quilted and embroidered with multiple colors and variegated embroidery thread. The bordering fabrics are dyed with black tea.
Batting is cotton. Binding is hand-stitched.
Care:
Machine wash cold, delicate cycle using gentle, pH-neutral detergent. Tumble dry low heat or air dry. To keep colors from fading, store or hang out of direct sunlight. Create warm memories, love, patch, and mend.
